Older People Hold Stronger Belief in God

Across the world, people have varying levels of belief (and disbelief) in God, with some nations being more devout than others. But new research reveals one constant across parts of the globe: As people age, their belief in God seems to increase.

The new study is based on data collected as part of the General Social Survey by researchers at the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago.

The researchers looked at data from 30 countries where surveys, taken at two or more time points between 1991 and 2008, asked residents about their belief in God. Participants answered three main "belief" questions, including their level of belief (from strong to atheistic), their changing beliefs over their lifetime and their attitude toward the notion that God is concerned with their personal lives.

Age seemed to be a big factor in belief. Belief in God was highest among older adults, with 43 percent of those 68 and older saying they are certain that God exists, compared with 23 percent of those 27 and younger, averaged across the countries surveyed.

"Looking at differences among age groups, the largest increases in belief in God most often occur among those 58 years of age and older," Smith said in a statement, referring to the change in belief between the 58 to 67 age group and those 68 and older. "This suggests that belief in God is especially likely to increase among the oldest groups, perhaps in response to the increasing anticipation of mortality." [8 Ways Religion Impacts Your Life]

Atheism ranged from 52 percent in the former East Germany to less than 1 percent in the Philippines; a largely opposite pattern was found for strong belief in God, with 84 percent of Philippine residents indicating such and 8 percent of those in East Germany saying they were certain God existed. The lowest "strong belief" in God came from Japan, where the level was 4 percent.

Overall, countries dominated by Catholic societies, like the Philippines, showed the strongest belief in God. The United States stood out for its high belief in God among developed countries. At the other end of the religion spectrum, atheism seemed to have the strongest hold in northwest European countries such as Scandinavia and those of the former Eastern Bloc, excluding Poland.

Support for the concept that God is concerned with people in a personal way ranged from 8 percent in the former East Germany to 82 percent in the Philippines. About 68 percent of individuals in the United States held that personal view of God.

Over the study period, just five of the countries showed a consistent growth in their belief in God: West Germany, Israel, Japan, Russia and Slovenia. Meanwhile, 16 countries showed a consistent decline in belief: Australia, Austria, East Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway and Poland. "Belief in God has decreased in most countries, but the declines are quite modest, especially when calculated on a per annum basis," the researchers write in their April 18 report of the survey.?

Though modest, this decrease could add up to a real effect over time.

"If the modest, general trend away from belief in God continues uninterrupted, it will accumulate to larger proportions and the atheism that is now prominent mainly in northwest Europe and some ex-Socialist states may spread more widely," they write, adding that it is possible the trend could go the other way, with belief in God seeing a rebound.

President Obama's 2012 Pitch in Focus: Firewall Against Romney

When President Obama holds his first public campaign rallies this week, he'll take direct control of a populist re-election narrative that Vice President Joe Biden and senior Obama strategists have spent weeks honing on the campaign trail.

The message: incumbent Obama is a firewall against a return to the "failed" foreign, social and economic policies of the George W. Bush administration, which are now embodied by presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Romney "basically wants to do what they did before - on steroids," former President Bill Clinton told a crowd of high-dollar donors at an Obama campaign fundraiser Sunday night, "which will get you the same consequences you got before, on steroids."

Biden has used a month-long series of five speeches on key campaign issues to methodically lay out the same argument, signaling that Democrats will focus less on positive promises for a second Obama term than on a negative message about Romney.

"He offers his prescription as if somehow it's a new idea, folks, like something we haven't seen before, even worse, like something we haven't actually tried before," Biden said of Romney's tax-cut focused economic plan during a speech in New Hampshire earlier this month.

"Folks, we've seen the movie before," Biden said. "It doesn't end well.? It does not end well.? Where has he been?"

At campaign rallies in Toledo, Ohio, and Davenport, Iowa, Biden highlighted the resurgence of the U.S. auto industry and manufacturing sector - both of which received financial support under the administration - as case studies in contrast with Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor famously opposed the 2009 auto bailout and has suggested the administration's emphasis on greater investment in U.S. manufacturers may be misplaced.

Biden warned retirees in Coconut Creek, Fla., that a President Romney would "dismantle" Medicare and roll back health care benefits for women, including abortion rights and contraception coverage.

And last week, in a foreign policy address in New York City, Biden publicly lashed Romney for a "Cold War mindset" and argued that "we cannot afford to go back to the future."

"One thing that could bring all this momentum to a screeching halt is turning over the keys to the White House to [Rick] Santorum or Romney," Biden said of the administration's record while in Davenport on March 28.

The targeted, populist pitch - to which Obama will more forcefully lend his voice this week - tracks closely with positions backed by large or increasing numbers of Americans.

Majorities of voters in recent public opinion polls side with Obama on higher taxes for millionaires and billionaires, for example, and resisting bold changes to Medicare as proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan and backed by Romney.

Growing numbers of Americans also say they support the taxpayer-funded auto bailout, and withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Republicans say Obama's argument is shaping up as a diversion from the unpopular aspects of his first term, including the health care overhaul and lingering high unemployment.

Romney aides say the president's pitch offers little substance for how he would accelerate the recovery and job growth or reduce the deficit, which a recent Pew Center poll found is the third most important issue to voters behind the economy and jobs.

"If [voters] want to continue down a path that we've seen with this president where the government is making decisions on our healthcare and on the kind of cars we can drive, the kind of energy we can use, the investments in Solyndra ? and the wasteful spending that we're seeing now and higher taxes," then they can support Obama, Romney adviser Ed Gillespie said Sunday on "Meet the Press."

But Team Romney is confident they can create a wedge with voters using the economy while defending against Obama's attacks.

The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll found Romney leading Obama on handling of the economy, with 47 percent of voters saying the Republican would do a better job with just 43 percent backing the president.

Romney also holds a narrow edge on energy policy and is tied with Obama on who would do better to support small businesses, according to the poll.

"I don't believe most Americans think that [continuing Obama's policies] is going to result actually in economic growth.? I think they think it'll continue what we have now, which is a pretty stifled economy that's limping along," Gillespie said.

"The American people are going to have a very clear choice in November," he added.

That's a statement on which both Team Romney and Team Obama agree.

Review: Prototype 2 | Video Games, Reviews, Features, Editorials ...

Traditionally when the mainstream media picks a game to focus on over video game violence, they usually choose the likes of Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty. The most popular titles are put on the chopping block, whether they deserve the harsh criticism or not. For the most part, the criticism is not warranted. When I think of a game to focus on in this scenario, a game like Prototype 2 comes to the forefront. With its brutal violence, constant use of abrasive language, and largely hidden sexual nature, Prototype 2 is not a game for everyone. Whether you feel these characteristics are necessary for artistic expression will unfortunately be a huge judge of whether you enjoy your experience with this game.

From the get-go, Prototype 2 makes it clear that this is an adult game. The opening cut scene establishes a harsh reality in New York Zero, the game?s devastating take on The Big Apple. With infection spreading and a father on a tour duty, helpless to protect his family, the game sets a scene that it never really follows through on. Once our serviceman and main character James Heller discovers his family has been murdered by the ?Mercer Virus? and unexpectedly infected by Alex Mercer himself, Heller storms into a world of destruction, killing anything and everything that stand in the way of finishing off the game?s villain. It is through this tour of destruction that the game takes a disturbing turn.

Instead of following through on this emotional opening and offering a compelling story of revenge, Prototype 2 instead becomes a cesspool of vulgarity and failed jokes. Sure, there is a ton of revenge, but it is all linked together by awful bits of story. Heller?s foul mouth is never silenced and the chauvinistic military tough-guys that litter the game spout colourful comments that will make even the most hardened veteran cringe. This relentless storm stands out more than it should for a game of this caliber. ?Hearing an NPC soldier say something along the lines of ?Hey, those infected women are pretty hot if you put a bag over their heads? made my stomach turn. Why would a game with so much potential stoop so low dialog-wise? Its at this point that it becomes clear the game is more interested in creating a distorted sense of ?grit? than telling a worthwhile story.

To be fair, the cut scenes are rather well done and do add quite a bit to the game. Certain characters and their adventures along side Heller ? such as Father Guerra ? also show a glimmer of story telling ability from the developers. It?s unfortunate though that this is all overshadowed by a pile of immature responses and awful one-liners. Overall, the less-than stellar story of the game can be chalked-up to James Heller being a misguided character. Going from caring military father to deranged, vulgarity-spewing maniac was just a bad decision. The game could have been much grittier if Heller?s actions held more weight from him being an average father forced to avenge his family using newly developed, super-human powers. Instead, they simply pushed the character over the edge and created an average, unstable video game ?tough guy?.

Fortunately, Prototype 2 is able to pick itself back up with its outstanding gameplay. There is no denying that Radical Entertainment knows how to make an open world game that is both expansive and enjoyable. Jumping, sprinting, and gliding across NYZ as James Heller is always a great experience. Exploration is complimented with a limited amount of collectibles that give the player something extra to do without bogging the gameplay down with hundreds of rudimentary pickups. At times all the jumping is stopped by a slight glitch or two, but none were game-breaking in my experience. A few jumps here or there will usually get you out of any glitchy situation.

Combat in the game is another stand-out. Fast and fluid is the name of this game. Mowing down enemies with Heller?s various abilities and power ups is undeniably fun. You would have to be a bitter stuck-up to not get at least the slightest bit of entertainment from viciously obliterating the troops, scientists, and pedestrians that populate NYZ. This violence is where the game shines and should have been the developer?s focus for creating a grimy scenario, instead of the heavy doses of intense language and questionable quotes. After slicing, dicing, smashing, and consuming thousands of NPCs, I have only one complaint: things can get very hectic. For the most part, these hectic scenarios are what make the game. However, there is nothing more frustrating in the game than trying to focus your attack on one enemy and having your target change without warning due to a crowding of enemies. If another Prototype game is in the works, Radical will have to either limit the amount of enemies, or, in my opinion, the much better solution of improving the aim focus system.

At the core of Prototype 2 is the game?s missions. Although there is an entire city ? with three zones ? to explore, the game is nothing without its missions. Unfortunately the majority of these missions are not so hot. Most missions offer something compelling through promotion of a new ability or something totally unique, which is awesome. What?s not so awesome is that the game relies far too heavily on its consumption system. With every NPC, the player has the option of having Heller consume them and take their memories, abilities, weapons, and appearance. This is a great way to create a few mission situations. However, the game uses it for just about every mission scenario. At some point in nearly every mission Heller is tasked with finding a particular NPC type, consuming one, and entering some form of building or laboratory. What?s interesting at first quickly becomes tiresome through overuse. The game has a lot of interesting ideas floating through the missions, but the constant use of consumption severely overshadows what?s great with what?s bad.

Graphically, the game is superb. The city of NYZ really comes alive as Heller trashes it. The amount of enemies on the screen and heavy action with no frame rate slowdown is amazing. There are a few graphical hitches here and there, specifically with Heller falling through environments. But for the most part the game stays strong in the graphical department. It won?t blow you away with its visuals, but the game does a fine job of creating a believable city then destroying it, all with a steady frame rate.

Another strong point for the game is its use of audio. Although Heller?s language will make you cringe most of the time, his voice acting is quite well done, as with all the NPCs in the game. While exploring there are times background music will pop-in, but none of it is ever distracting. It?s nice when it comes in and often leaves you wondering why it doesn?t come in more often. Solid audio all around.

Once all of the missions have been completed, the game does offer some replay value. It will take a while to fully upgrade Heller and his abilities. Various events and sidemissions spread across the game will also help keep players entertained. Those looking for additional replay value will find plenty more in the game?s RADNET service, which comes free with new purchases of the game. Although there are a healthy serving of sidemissions and additional content, I feel that it is lacking a bit for an open world game. But to be fair, the game is already a little cluttered as-is. Those looking to spend just as long after the credits role collecting various items and maxing out Heller may be a little disappointed. But for the average player, Prototype 2 offers the right amount of replay value.

It is unfortunate that a game like Prototype 2 is overshadowed by a misguided main character, lackluster story, and repetitious missions. With fantastic, action-packed gameplay, outstanding visuals, and solid audio, the game could have been amazing. Instead, the game will likely wallow in mediocrity, all capitalized by its preventable downfalls. Radical has many lessons to learn from this game. Those looking for a great open-world title may want to look elsewhere. Those a little more daring should definitely give this title a chance. It definitely is far from great, but there are some solid concepts for the developers to build on and enough entertaining content to keep most gamers going through the game?s six hour story and possibly even beyond.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Detroit Tigers left fielder Delmon Young was arrested Friday on a hate crime harassment charge after police said he got into a fight with a group of men and yelled anti-Semitic epithets.

Young was standing outside of the Hilton New York at about 1:30 a.m., where he was staying ahead of a series with the New York Yankees that starts Friday night. Nearby, a group of about four Chicago tourists staying at the hotel were approached by a panhandler wearing a yarmulke and a Star of David around his neck. After, as the group walked up to the hotel doors, Young started yelling anti-Semitic epithets, police said.

It was not clear whom Young was yelling at, but he got into a tussle with the Chicago group, and a 32-year-old man sustained scratches to his elbows, according to police.

Both Young and the group went inside the hotel, and at some point, police were called, and Young was arrested, police said. He was arrested on a charge of aggravated harassment as a hate crime.

Young was first taken to a hospital because he was believed to be intoxicated, police said. He was at a police precinct and may be facing arraignment later.

Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski had no comment. The team said in a statement that it was aware of the incident. Because of a provision in baseball's labor contract, the team said any allegation involving alcohol is referred to baseball's employee assistance program.

"It would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this time," the Tigers said.

An email sent to Young's agent wasn't immediately returned. His lawyer declined to comment.

It was not clear whether Young would play Friday at the 7:05 p.m. game. The Tigers were home Thursday afternoon, where Young went 0-for-3 with a walk in a 5-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Young is hitting .242 with one home run and five RBIs, is signed to a one-year contract for $6,725,000 and can become a free agent after the season.

In 2006, Young was suspended for 50 games without pay by the International League for throwing a bat that hit a replacement umpire in the chest. Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 amateur draft, was ejected in the first inning after taking a called third strike. He lingered in the batter's box, walked away and then threw his bat end over end at the umpire, hitting him in the chest.

Young has played for the Tigers since last season, spending two seasons before with the Minnesota Twins. He's the younger brother of former outfielder and first baseman Dmitri Young.

United Airlines CEO paid more than $13 million

DALLAS (AP) ? Jeffery Smisek helped put together the world's largest airline with the merger of United and Continental, and the company rewarded him by more than tripling his compensation last year to $13.4 million.

More than half the compensation for the airline's CEO came from stock awards, including incentives for the merger that created United Continental Holdings Inc.

Smisek's 2011 compensation was disclosed in a proxy statement that the Chicago-based company filed Friday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. An analysis by The Associated Press calculates the value that the company put on compensation awarded to the CEO in that year and excludes changes in pension value, so it differs from the total that the company reports to the SEC.

Smisek, 57, was the CEO of Houston-based Continental Airlines and helped negotiate the combination with United. He was paid compensation valued at nearly $4.4 million in 2010.

Last year, Smisek was given stock awards that were valued at $7.53 million when they were granted in February 2011, including $4.4 million in merger incentives.

Smisek was paid a salary of $975,000, up from $791,250 in 2010; $4.41 million in separate incentive payments, up from $3.56 million in 2010; and $454,918 in other compensation, up from $9,766 the year before.

The other-compensation column included $241,457 for travel and relocation help, as well as $67,947 for insurance premiums paid by the company.

Other top United executives also got merger incentives that could become very valuable. The awards for Chief Financial Officer Zane Rowe, Chief Operations Officer Peter McDonald and Chief Revenue Officer James Compton were valued at $1.65 million apiece. Rowe announced this month he is leaving for Apple Inc.,

For Smisek to get his merger payoff, the company must hit revenue and cost-saving targets over a three-year period ending in December 2013 and achieve merger milestones. Some of those milestones have already been met.

One milestone was combining the United and Continental computerized reservations systems. The switchover last month, however, didn't go smoothly, and many customers endured long waits on hold to fix ticketing problems. Smisek apologized this week, saying the airline had failed to deliver adequate customer service.

United Continental and rivals such as Delta Air Lines Inc. have benefited from consolidation that has reduced the number of U.S. airlines and made it easier for the survivors to raise fares. United earned $840 million in 2011 and $253 million in 2010 after losing $6 billion the previous two years combined.

But lately, even fare increases and a slew of extra fees charged to passengers haven't been enough to offset sharply higher jet fuel prices. This week, United Continental reported that it lost $448 million in the first three months of the year, although the loss was smaller than analysts had feared.

Even as United Continental earned money last year, stockholders didn't share in the bounty. The airline's shares lost 26 percent of their value during 2011, although they have gained most of it back this year.

The AP's calculation of executive compensation includes salary, bonuses, perks and the estimated value of stock and stock options awarded during the year. The amount that Smisek or other CEOs eventually get can differ, depending on the performance of the company's stock after awards are granted. Most companies require an executive to wait a certain amount of time before getting stock grants or exercising options.

Severtson GP4360

If you need a screen you can move, set up, and put away quickly and easily, you won't want to miss the Severtson GP4360 ($490 street). Reasonably portable, the GP4360 offers a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 60-inch diagonal screen with matte white screen material. The size is a key feature: among other reasons, because it's arguably the largest you can hope for without seriously compromising portability. Some might argue that even 60 inches is a little over the line. But if 60-inches is the size screen you want, the GP4360 is a strong contender.

Whether you consider the GP4360 portable depends on how you define portability. At about 13 pounds and 3.1 by 54.4 by 2.4 inches when it's closed up, it's small and light enough to carry by its handle easily from room to room, or, say, put in your car to bring with you. However, it's not as portable as the Epson ES1000 ($129.99 direct, 4 stars), which can fit in an airplane?s overhead storage bin. It's also not quite rugged enough to trust that it will survive if you check it in as baggage.

On the other hand, it's certainly a lot easier to carry without bumping into things than still larger portable screens, like the 80-inch diagonal Optoma DP-MW9080A ($350 street, 4 stars), or the 92-inch diagonal Severtson GP169923D ($1,150 street, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed. These larger screens are best limited to keeping in a single room where you can't install a screen permanently. I'd argue that the GP4360's balance of screen size and portability makes it a much better choice for carrying from room to room.

Setup
Severtson's pull-up screens use a frame that makes both setting up and putting away the screen almost trivial. The frame has two feet on the bottom. When you pack it up for storage or carrying, you swivel the feet to line up along the width of the case, so they don't stick out. To set it up, you pivot both feet?with one near each end of the case?so they're perpendicular to the case to give the screen better stability.

Next, you set the screen on the floor, press the release button, grab the top of the screen, and lift it to unroll it from the case. Let go at any height, and it will stay in place, thanks to the spring-loaded accordion-style support behind it. As with most pull-up screens, additional black material extends below the screen material itself, so the bottom of the viewing area can be anywhere from right at the top of the base to well above it.

As with the Severtson GP169923D, the GP4360?s screen height is infinitely adjustable, so you can change it simply by lifting it more or pushing it down. Very much worth mention is that the tension on the accordion support is so well balanced that lifting up and pushing down are both nearly effortless.

Total setup time is only a few seconds to pivot the feet plus about a second for lifting the screen. Closing it to put it away is just as fast and easy. Push it down to the base, listen for the click that tells you it's locked into place, and rotate the legs back to their stored position.

Other Issues
According to Severtson, the white matte screen material on the GP4360 offers a 1.0 gain. That means it offers the same brightness over the entire 180 degree angle of view, which I confirmed from a quick look at the screen from various angles. The 1.0 gain makes it an appropriate choice for the seating arrangements you'll often find in conference rooms, where people are viewing the screen from a wide range of angles.

The Severtson GP4360's combination of screen size and easy setup makes it a particularly good choice for room to room portability or for keeping it in one room where you can close it up quickly after each use and let it sit unobtrusively at the base of a wall. More than that, the ease and speed of setting it up and packing it up earns lots of points for avoiding wasted time at the beginning and end of each session. All this adds up to make the Severtson GP4360 both an intriguingly attractive compromise between screen size and portability, and very much worth considering.

India must hike fuel prices : Manmohan Singh

NEW DELHI:
India must hike fuel prices to offset spiralling oil import bills, Premier Manmohan Singh said on Saturday, after refiners threatened to raise petrol prices to curb growing losses.

"We need to rationalise prices and at the same time ensure that the poor and needy are shielded from the effects of such a rationalisation," Singh said in a speech at the opening of a refinery in the northern state of Punjab.

"With imports accounting for 80 percent of our crude supplies, the spiralling prices of crude in the international market have put a severe strain on our import bill," he added, without offering details on the hike.

In the speech, posted on his website, he said India needs to conserve energy and there is "no room for inefficient and wasteful usage of fuel" in the country, where blackouts are frequent.

Congress-led government in June 2010 deregulated petrol prices in a reform aimed at reducing the massive subsidies it pays to state-run fuel refiners which rely on imported energy.

Refiners have not raised petrol prices since December 2011 but say they must unless the cash-strapped government offsets their costs. A sharp fall in the value of the rupee against the dollar has exacerbated the companies' losses.

When the government freed up prices for petrol, seen as a fuel mainly used by middle-class Indians, it kept control of cooking gas and kerosene prices to protect the poor -- Congress's key supporters -- against price shocks.

It also kept diesel fuel at below-market prices.

Singh's warning that fuel prices need to rise comes as the government battles stubborn inflation, running at nearly seven percent, and a slew of corruption scandals that have badly undermined its popularity.

The high cost of imported fuel is partly blamed for the ballooning of India's current account deficit -- the gap between exports and goods and services imports -- to its widest level in eight years.

Earlier in the week, Standard and Poor's cut India's credit rating outlook to negative from stable, citing the country's high deficits as partly to blame, and warned of a one-in-three chance it would lose its investment grade status.
