If you need a screen you can move, set up, and put away quickly and easily, you won't want to miss the Severtson GP4360 ($490 street). Reasonably portable, the GP4360 offers a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 60-inch diagonal screen with matte white screen material. The size is a key feature: among other reasons, because it's arguably the largest you can hope for without seriously compromising portability. Some might argue that even 60 inches is a little over the line. But if 60-inches is the size screen you want, the GP4360 is a strong contender.
Whether you consider the GP4360 portable depends on how you define portability. At about 13 pounds and 3.1 by 54.4 by 2.4 inches when it's closed up, it's small and light enough to carry by its handle easily from room to room, or, say, put in your car to bring with you. However, it's not as portable as the Epson ES1000 ($129.99 direct, 4 stars), which can fit in an airplane?s overhead storage bin. It's also not quite rugged enough to trust that it will survive if you check it in as baggage.
On the other hand, it's certainly a lot easier to carry without bumping into things than still larger portable screens, like the 80-inch diagonal Optoma DP-MW9080A ($350 street, 4 stars), or the 92-inch diagonal Severtson GP169923D ($1,150 street, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed. These larger screens are best limited to keeping in a single room where you can't install a screen permanently. I'd argue that the GP4360's balance of screen size and portability makes it a much better choice for carrying from room to room.
Setup
Severtson's pull-up screens use a frame that makes both setting up and putting away the screen almost trivial. The frame has two feet on the bottom. When you pack it up for storage or carrying, you swivel the feet to line up along the width of the case, so they don't stick out. To set it up, you pivot both feet?with one near each end of the case?so they're perpendicular to the case to give the screen better stability.
Next, you set the screen on the floor, press the release button, grab the top of the screen, and lift it to unroll it from the case. Let go at any height, and it will stay in place, thanks to the spring-loaded accordion-style support behind it. As with most pull-up screens, additional black material extends below the screen material itself, so the bottom of the viewing area can be anywhere from right at the top of the base to well above it.
As with the Severtson GP169923D, the GP4360?s screen height is infinitely adjustable, so you can change it simply by lifting it more or pushing it down. Very much worth mention is that the tension on the accordion support is so well balanced that lifting up and pushing down are both nearly effortless.
Total setup time is only a few seconds to pivot the feet plus about a second for lifting the screen. Closing it to put it away is just as fast and easy. Push it down to the base, listen for the click that tells you it's locked into place, and rotate the legs back to their stored position.
Other Issues
According to Severtson, the white matte screen material on the GP4360 offers a 1.0 gain. That means it offers the same brightness over the entire 180 degree angle of view, which I confirmed from a quick look at the screen from various angles. The 1.0 gain makes it an appropriate choice for the seating arrangements you'll often find in conference rooms, where people are viewing the screen from a wide range of angles.
The Severtson GP4360's combination of screen size and easy setup makes it a particularly good choice for room to room portability or for keeping it in one room where you can close it up quickly after each use and let it sit unobtrusively at the base of a wall. More than that, the ease and speed of setting it up and packing it up earns lots of points for avoiding wasted time at the beginning and end of each session. All this adds up to make the Severtson GP4360 both an intriguingly attractive compromise between screen size and portability, and very much worth considering.
