Airman?s Medal for dad killed saving daughter in Alabama tornado

Published: April 28, 2012

In the midst of 150 mph tornado winds last year in Alabama, an Air Force veteran died rushing to the aid of his youngest daughter.

On Monday, his wife accepted the Airman?s Medal on his behalf.

The ceremony at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., honored Sgt. Steven A. Hollon for using his body to protect his 9-year-old daughter, Faith, as their family home crashed down during the April 15 tornado that hit Prattville last year.

According to the Air Force, Hollon?s efforts saved his daughter?s life, as witnesses found the two together after they were thrown 50 feet.

The award was presented by Air University Commander Lt. Gen. David Fadok, who spoke of Hollon?s ?ultimate sacrifice.?

"Steve embraced and internalized our core values, even in his last moments," said Fadok.

In addition to Faith, the 22-year veteran is survived by wife, Karen, and another daughter, Renae.
